About the mailinglist wx-users

Post by Jorg »

Hi guys,

Is it just me, or is the wx-users mailinglist simply becoming useless ? Sometimes when I do need to ask a question there (because I know still a lot of devs hang out there) I always hope to be answered. However my previous 4 posts with questions or so stay unanswered. If it was just me I could live with that, but it seems that very rarely questions get answered (big threads are usually flames or verbal fights nowadays).

I am glad there is the forum, but is it me or are other also experiencing this?

Regards,

I usually try to answer when I know what the answer is (or can point out a place which allow user to find the answer). I do not remember all your posts but I just visited http://lists.wxwidgets.org/cgi-bin/ezml ... :aas:77111 and I think the problem can be with nature of your questions. They are... not trivial. Post the same questions in this forum and I'm curious how many solutions you will find here. I think you are not average user and your questions are not average new user problems. In fact question about shapshots is like asking about complete tool which could be released for money. Parhaps that's why you do not find free support :-) Anyway going back to my post, I do not know how to answer your questions :-(

Hi ABX,

Well I am flattered you call my questions 'not trivial' .. it is in my nature to try first and ask later and sometimes you reach a deeper problem or more directed towards what is really going on. But it is not only non trivial questions that are not answered, I see a lot of easy ones as well left abandoned. I don't have time to answer them all, and I think others feel the same as they are left unanswered ;-)

Anyway the succesrate on this forum is much higher, and I feel that this is also related to people like coming back here. The effort to read wx-emails is lower then the effort of people having to log into the wx-forum, but still more gets answered.

Oh well, maybe the email list is getting outdated ... It might be an idea in the future to talk to Julian to see if there is a more official place for the forum to be hosted, and leave the emailing list slowly 'die out' .. Once a new site is in place (they were talking about this) it might be a good idea to move the forum over ..

Not that it is a burden to host it though ... I enjoy the management very much..

Yeah, honestly I'm not exactly sure what happened to wx-users. Did the users all go here all of a sudden?

A lot of the problem I think is that WX is going through some major growing pains, especially the MSW refresh stuff which is probably taking a lot of Vadim's time - who used to answer the vast majority questions on wx-users.

Maybe it's just the natural order of things.

I must say that it is nice to converse in a flame-free environment where people like me who make screwups in posts a lot can edit them later to get rid of the not so nice parts in them :).

Also, I will take this time to point out that you can click the "view unanswered posts" on the main page to see all posts that have 0 responses and I use it a lot, even sometimes posting a reply to several-month-old posts.
