How does one pronounce 'wxWidgets'?

Post by bigpilot »

I myself always pronounce it 'wix-widgets' but as I'm not a native English speaker I'm not entirely sure that's correct.

I also pronounce it as w-x-widgets. I think the official one is wix-widgets, although the w and x are actually from Windows and X-Windows back when Julian only had a port for Windows and Linux. So if they are two seperate abbreviations, w-x-widgets sounds more accurate ..

double-yew-axe-widgets. Basically the same as the rest of them. But since most people have pronunciations for everything, our guess is as good as mine (GUI as gooey, I insist on gee-you-aye, SQL as sequel, I insist on ass-que-ell etc.)

Please be aware that the name originated in 1990, when Julian wrote something for a company he worked for (if I am correct) that had to serve as a layer between Windows and X-Windows. It was originally called wxWindows, until Borland wanted to use it in BuilderX. Then Microsoft paniced and wanted to see the name changed. So it became wxWidgets.

Brief history in a nutshell ;-)
