Interesting topic ;-)

For me it varies... I listen to the radio mostly during the day. When I get annoyed hearing the same darn song all the time, I switch it off and grab my Creative Zen ... My styles of music are;

- Turntablism, hip-hop
- Drum & Bass / Jungle (when I am really in the mood for some fast coding)
- Pop (Presidents of the U.S.A)
- Rap (Public Enemy / Run D.M.C and all in between)

My choice of music really varies from fast to slow, sometimes I like to listen to chillout too.

So if there is a relation between the music and programming, maybe chill out can be related to a mellowed down state when you want to just flow with your code, like boring lines of code, and your mind is somewhere else..

I rarely listen to the radio since the music is usually very horrible and annoying, so it's pretty much Winamp 24/7.

My Audioscrobbler profile can be found at http://www.audioscrobbler.com/user/mmortician/. The profile should give some more information on my favourite bands and so on (there is also a link to my CD and vinyl collection).

There is no specific genre for programming and I basically select it to match the current mood. Of course some genres can be very distracting when trying to code (like all fast & catchy stuff).

For me its techno or rock, usually a bit repetitive but not too fast so that it doesn't distract from the task at hand.

Smashing pumpkins come to mind...

Calm and/or silent stuff will probably put you to sleep when doing the hard parts though :).

Hi!
Mostly Bigbeat & Drum&Bass. www.bigbeat.ch is my inet radio station of choice.
For the more "silent" moments a bit of 80's music. When being aggresivly debugging: Metallica, AC/DC, you get the point :D

Sometimes just listening to my two Huskies breathing is enough, other times ...

Mostly a Pink Floyd, 3 Doors Down, Placebo, Evanescence collection on Shuffle so I don't know what is coming next.

"and Sometimes... Just Sometimes..." I listen to my collection of Japanese Daiko (drums) (Kodo, Wadaiko Yamato)

And I'll give 10 geek points to the first person who recognises the quote.

Was this for me?

No I am not Japanese, I am actualy English but currently live in the Netherlands. As Jorg could probably tell you the Netherlands has a rich cultural life, with regular visits from foreign bands, dancers, shows etc.

I have seen the Tribute to the Blues Brothers, several Japanese Drum groups, Taiwanese Dancers, and theater shows.

There is a lot more to do here in the Netherlands wrt music/dance/stage than there ever was in Hartlepool or region. The only thing I did in England was go to a few pop concerts, (Tina Turner, the Police, Ultravox, Gillan, Yazoo).
