If you are using wxDev-C++ for your wxWidgets design, please ask your questions here instead of in IDE Related.

Alpha release of book - Programming with wxDev-C++

Post by Sof_T »

Today sourceforge has accepted my project submission and I am able to upload releases. The sourceforge page is http://sourceforge.net/projects/wxdevcpp-book/ Tomorrow a first basic homepage will go up. Tonight I wil release the first alpha of the book. So far it consists of a contents page, an introduction and the first two chapters. Work is progressing on the next chapter.

It is planned to release source code samples to complement the book and later a CD rom maybe in iso format containing the latest release of wxDevC++, wxWidgets source code, compiled Devpaks of the latest release, other interesting DevPaks, source code examples and more.

The book aims to cover topics such as installing, upgrading and trouble shooting wxDevC++. Programming and debugging from within the IDE. Using the form designer including using sizers. Basic C and C++ programming. All feedback is welcome and will be considered for inclusion in the book. Any errors you find please let me know via Sourceforge bug report or this forum and these will be amended.

Offers of project help is also welcome. The book release will be uploaded at 6pm GMT. I don't know how long it takes Sourceforge to propagate the changes, but keep checking by. I don't have a release schedule as yet, but I expect this to be little and often.

Enjoy.

Just a quick post to say the first release of the book has been uploaded. It is being propagated across the Sourceforge mirror sites at the moment. The book is in PDF format and is contained in a zip file which is approximately 1.4Mb in size.

There is also a small zip file available which contains the accompanying source code.

Any feedback is always welcome. I'll post new releases here in this thread.

Hi Sof_T.

First of all, congratulations on getting this thing started once and for all, so far, the book looks good.

Second, I'm reading the first pages, but I found a monumental error: You are giving credit of starting wx-devcpp to Nuklear Zelph, when in reality, Guru Kathiresan http://forums.wxwidgets.org/profile.php ... file&u=177 is the father of this project. If I'm correct, Nuklear joined the project just recently

Other than that, good work, I'll keep posting errors if found.

Hi Buildere

You got me worried. I think the section you are referring to is this
I was torn between DevC++ and C++ Builder until I joined a project on SourceForge in 2005. This project was headed by a programmer known as Nuklear Zelph and was being developed using an application which had slipped past me called wxDevC++.
I will rewrite this if necessary. The project I joined was called SkinDoc a media player skin builder headed by Nuklear Zelph. He was developing this in wxDevC++. I was not trying to say that he developed wxDevC++. Check the section under History.

Hi Buildere

I have changed the wording slightly to make it more obvious, in case others get the same wrong impression.

Just to say there is an updated release.

The introduction has been slightly reworded to avoid confusion as to the author of wxDevC++.

Three more sections have been completed in Chpter 3, this deals with C programming, so if this is not an area of interest you propably will want to skip this release.

New source code to complement the release is available.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your efforts to write a book for wx-DevC++.
When I saw this post I was really happy that our work will be useful to more people that we have originally imagined.
We should definitely add the book information in the site.

-regards,
Guru

Hi Guru

Firstly thanks you for your efforts in creating wxDevC++ without which there would be no book. Adding this to your site would be most welcome.

Secondly thanks for the warning about the corrupted zip file. I have uploaded and tested a replacement. It should download okay now.

 My mistake. I uploaded a new release Programming_with_wxDevC++_Alpha_0_2_12.zip. Checked it worked, then hid the damaged one. Only I didn't, I hid the good one and left the damaged one. :?

Thank you Low Joel, maybe this time I'll get it right.

What other variants do I mention, other than Dev-C++. Which I consider necessary since some of the features which newcomers might not like are due to the design of DevC++ and I think it is far to share the blame.

By the way what is the offical name, it appears variously as wxDevCpp, wxDevC++ and wxDev-C++. Which is the preferred version?

I've always pushed for the use of wxDev-C++, since I think that looks the best... and I think recently everyone has played along too, lol.

If you want I can write a chapter on the VC branch sometime next week.
