Window Longhorn?

Post by zecryan » Sat May 07, 2005 6:51 am

I know that Longhorn is only in beta but does anyone know if wxWidget program willl be able to run on it? I only ask beucase i think that Longhorn is basic a whole rewrite of windows? And since i don;t think it will be using WIN32 ofr it GUI API, when will wxWidgets supports Longhorn native GUI API (hope i am using right term)?

Standard Win32 applications (even compiled for winxp-w2k) can run on Longhorn. I have tested this last year, but it was an application not using wxWidgets.
I assume it works well for wxWidgets applications.

some graphical elements may not be displayed properly, as this is the main difference with previous themes.

First, wxWidgets is now a "rewrite" of Windows. It is simply system calls wrapper. The basic WinAPI will not be droped too in Windows Codename Longhorn. Longhorn contains a new GUI technology called Avalon. wxWidgets cannot support Avalon yet because Avalon isn't finished yet! About Longhorn themes support, well, we will all need to wait for at least Longhorn Beta 2 release for it to adopt an almost-final shell theme. About your app working on Longhorn-> sure, why not? :) It is still 32bits Windows after all (although there will be a 64bits version of Longhorn as well).

Hopefully some questions are cleared.

Notwithstanding what MS might say, rest assured that Win32 API are alive and kicking. Remember that there is a huge amout of applications wchich require not only source compatibility but BINARY compatiblity to work.

Further API will be introduced (may be  ) in Loghorn, but they will be just that, FURTHER API, which will extended what you already have.

I assume that wxWidgets will, in time, support further API.

Bye :D
