[wxW Win 2.6.1 Unicode] Icon doesn't display correctly

When using the MDI interface on Windows XP, the document icon to the left of the File menu (only visible when the document is maximised) does not display correctly.
The transparency colour is not entirely transparent (slightly lighter than the XP menu bar colour) and the final row of pixels is repeated three times.
This problem is not limited to my application. The same thing happens in the example program docvwmdi.
I've tried following MSDN's advice (many icon sizes and colour depths) and wxIconBundle, but none of this made any difference.
The icon is fine when the document frame is visible. Also this isn't a problem on Win2K.
Has anybody run into the same problem and found a solution? I'd be very grateful for all help!
