gcc 4.2 Installation Help
Of course, but then this thread goes the way of all "what distribution is teh (sic) best" threads on the internet:
45 post from $DISTRIBUTION-fanboys consisting of nothing more than name calling and lots of bad arguments for or against a particular Linux.
Then suddenly all of those who previously bashed each other band together and agree that "micro$oft is teh suxxor".
Then the MS fanboys arrive and it all starts over again.
Back to the serious side: Most major distributions nowadays are really good. It's all personal preference, nothing more.

Yeah, I agree we shouldn't go there. Just you opened it up, and I pointed it out

I have nothing to do with particular distribution, I had already Ret hat installed at my office, and as Red hat and its derivatives support is the best in India, people go for that only. The question was just basic, how to install the latest gcc, as yum and other methods does not worked. And the installation help is too complex for me. I have nothing to do with the latest features in GCC, as I won't be using it anyway. The thing is not about gcc, the thing is just I want to learn what;s the way to software update on linux work.

Right, get the latest gcc that is available _to your distribution_, not some bleeding edge stuff like gcc-4.0.2, that only a few distributions have available by default. (Fedora core 5 will have it as default, iirc, but so do others soon).
Fedora's default package manager is yum, and on the link I posted it ought to describe how to install and upgrade software with yum.
