Do you have a question about makefiles, a compiler or IDE you are using and need to know how to set it up for wxWidgets or why it doesn't compile but other IDE's do ? Post your questions here.

Best IDE

Post by Hrvoje » Tue May 22, 2012 11:08 am

Which one is the best IDE for wxWidgets (version 2.8.10 or newer) ?

I tried with VS2010 and wxwidgets but it's impossible to make them work. I've been trying for a week. I found some web-sites with explanation how to set-up but i couldn't.
I tried wxDevC++, but "profiling analysis" doesn't work.

I don't know what to do..

Can somebody recommend me best way to work with wxwidgets ?

Are you really sure about that? Even if you can't make it work with MSVS 2010, have you tried MSVS 2008? What are the VS 2010 features you are missing in vS 2008? I can attest that wxWidgets 2.8 certainly work with MSVC Express 2008 and wxWidgets 2.9 work also with MSVC Express 2010. I haven't tried wxWidgets 2.8 and MSVC 2010 combination (and I have no longer MSVC 2010 installed). If you would want to try MSVC 2008, I'm quite sure I could help you to make it work.

Also if you are new to wxWidgets, I would recommend starting with 2.9 - they're stable enough, see the last news item on the wxWidgets homepage.

I doubt that. I've build wxWidgets with pretty much every VisualStudio version from the last 10 years, VS2002,2003,2005,2008 and 2010.

I don't know what exactl you tried, but maybe this helps:

Does "profiling analysis" work, too ?

As mentioned above, I use Express version which does not support profiling.

I used Code::Blocks long ago and it was good. I have been using CodeLite since then and I am happy with it.
MSVC was too complicated for me plus It is not cross platform (I primarily develop on Linux)

I've been using codeblocks for years doing all kinds of things. I've never needed anything else. I switch to it after my visual studio v6.0 got too old to do anything relevant... I didn't want to get stuck paying for another compiler/ide. Yes, you can download the new one for free, but you might want to read the fine print on how your allowed to use it...
