Switching soon now!

Post by Jorg »

Ok guys, this is what I am going to do:

I am in the busy sending the registration and domain move papers to my new provider. They claim I can be moved over in 48 hours. Once these are sent in, I will bakcup this forum every hour, until it is being taken over. If I am not able to back it up due to me needing some sleep as well, I will deactivate the forum so nobody can post anymore. Then I will backup the site once more, and hope I will be switched in the morning. This is to assure no lost of posts and newly registered users.

When switched I will restore the DB, and hope all will go smooth in the process.

Just to let you all know, I might not be able to guarantee 0% down time ;-)

Regards,
- Jorgen

Hi!
No 100% guarantee????
I'm feeling the "forum-cold-turkey" coming.... Better start looking for a place where I can post in the meantime.. :D

Thanks, I am all ready to switch. I backup this site every hour or so, I guess when the domain transfers I cannot reach this site nomore to get my latest stuff. I have tried to approach it with an IP address only, but end up at the hosting company's site ..

They said within 48 hours, I sent the papers yesterday afternoon, so it can take as long as tomorrow afternoon, we will see ;-)

At least when there is lot of space we can do more cool stuff here, and I am planning to look into a portal where people can post wxWidgets source code and maintain it (posting news etc). This to replace the Code Dump way of doing stuff which is ofcourse a bit cumbersome.

Ok, step one is complete. My current hosting service agreed to terminate the contract (there is a 2 months notification period and I was 2 weeks overdue ;-) so now I have to wait until the new hosting service takes over my registered domain.

Ok, some update on the migration:

- I imported the DB to my new hosting, using the mysql command line
- I moved the php code for the forum to the new hosting,
- Changed the DB login and location

If all goes well, this will work too; wxwidgets.solidsteel.nl, but it should also be accessible through the normal URL.

So now is the wait for the new domain to become active...
