Hosting changes

Post by Jorg »

Hi Folks!

I have got a link from a friend who switched over to another provider for the webservice. It is much cheaper, I get 500 Meg and I can have 99 databases. I am currently in the process of moving this domain to the new web hosting, and I hope this will go smooth. It can however be that the site will be down for a few days if my current provider is ticked offf enough to not let me use it for the remainder of my payment period.

With this new provider we can seriously start to think about storing snippets and code, and maybe make a better front end for it.

I am sorry that I was absent a lot, I was in the process of finding a good CMS, having a bit of holiday and attending personal chores such as work around the house ;-)

Just to let you all know, that when this site is down, it is due to moving.

Regards,
- Jorgen

Hi!
Sounds great!

The last host moving I managed went pretty smooth, so I expect there'll be only short downtimes.

Did you decide about a CMS? Personaly I think they all have dissadvantages, but maybe you found something the REALLY suits your needs...

Well Mambo is realy the best I could find. Very well designed and very customizable. Only, they didn't take into account that SAFE MODE is always on with hosting providers, and this prevents easy installation of components. I tried;

ezPublish - Crashed upon installation with memory footprint errors
Xoops - Got an empty frame when logging out I could never log back in
Various other small ones, all with dissapointing results.

Basically what I am looking for is the following features;
- Blogging / news publish
- People being able to comment on my posts
- File management, e.g. categorizing of downloads (+hitcount)
- Uploading of files by others
- RSS
- Categories for various projects

If possible store data in SQL database for easy maintenance.

Mambo has much of these and a lot through extensions. But like I said extending it is tough in SAFE MODE. Anybody has some ideas what to try?

Hi!
Indeed, Mambo would be my choice too.
Typo3 is very famous. Maybe have a look at that. I think they've got some easy to install packs to play with.

Cool,

I haven't tried that one because the site said it was very difficult. I looked at http://opensourcecms.com which is a site that showcases a lot of sites by their default .. Their comment on Typo3 was;
First off, there is no Typo3 demo here. There is nothing wrong with Typo3. It installs easy enough as long as you have the needed server side software. The problem I'm having is the demo database is just too large for my refreshing script. The default database is 4 megs and for some strange reason won't completely refresh for me.
edit: This is the part about being difficult:
TYPO3 is definitely not for beginners. You need a lot of time and endurance to squeeze the best out of it. But than it's one of the most powerfull CMS I know... I love it... :-)
That really put me after trying to find a good one for days and being dissapointed by either my provider or the quality. I am also suffering DB size problems (well I can still grow but only for like 40 Megs or so) .. So before hogging it all I wanted to try a smaller variant first.

But, if I can manage to step over to the other hosting, at least I have a lot of space PLUS IMAP! I really love that! I keep my mail on the web to make sure I don't miss out on answers to people (how much they are delayed or not) and with IMAP I can keep my mail where ever I want. :-)

This is why I love VPS hosting, or more specifically Linode.com. I can setup whatever I need and there's no restrictions except for the ones I configure and the hardware restrictions (available ram usually being a problem). It just tends to be slightly more expensive, but well worth it.
