REQUEST FOR NEW MODERATORS!

Post by Jorg »

It has (indeed) been a while since we had a new round of asking people to become a moderator for the wxWidgets forum.

Why a new round? Every moderator that is still active, don't worry you are not replaced. Reply to this thread if you are still actively monitoring the forums you wanted to moderate. If you feel you lack the time or want to stop being one, also reply so we can figure out how many sub forums are are mostly unmoderated at the moment.

What does moderating mean? Is it a dayjob? No. If you check in once a day that is fine. In the sub forums you want to monitor, make sure that the posts are in the right place, if not move the post to the proper sub forum. If you feel a a person is cross posting, delete all the posts that are not in the right place, or when one of them is answered to, move that post first and then remove all ignored / unread posts with the lowest read count. If people spam on this forum, tell me in the "Admin and Mods Hideout" which is a forum that is visible to all moderators and admins, to discuss certain actions to take on certain people. The admin and mods hideout can also be used to ask questions f you are not sure how to perform certain moderating tasks.

So when you think you can help us moderating, and had your fair share of solved questions (read wxAwards points you gathered), leave a note on this thread.

With regards,
- Jorgen

Still hanging out here, still monitoring :-)
I'm just not as active in posting as I used to be.

If you like you may think about appointing a new admin as well. My administrative actions are mostly zero (except activating accounts once in a while) at the moment. I don't have time to do backups as I can't do it from work anymore.
So, if you feel there is need, please feel free to appoint another admin.

Hi Jorgen,
So when you think you can help us moderating, and had your fair share of solved questions (read wxAwards points you gathered), leave a note on this thread.
I tune in to most of the sub-fora 3 or 4 times a day, and I have the time; so I'd be happy to moderate if you wish.

Regards,

David

I was originally made moderator to moderate the french section, which actually never happened. But I'm happy to help in other forums too. I think people already know me as the "please-use-code-tags" person :P

I check in almost daily, and wouldn't mind helping out when it's needed. I was just getting used to my "wxWorld Domination!" title though. ;)

Hey guys,

Well upCASE, you and me seem to be more in the background on this forum which is not a bad thing, it just means that this forum is mature enough to run on it's own. The amount of spam or otherwise misbehaving members has been neglectible which is nice. So if you play 1/2 of an admin, I will do the other 1/2 ;-)

Auria, you are now a moderator in all forums as you wish :-)

Tierra and David, welcome on board :-) You will see there is a new forum now present called the Admin & Moderator's Hide Out. In there you can discuss (or look at old discussions) behaviour of members you find questionable. We're a democracy so if you are not sure how to deal with a person and certain behaviour of them, you can post a question in that sub forum to see if we can find a solution together.

Also read this topic:
http://forums.wxwidgets.org/viewtopic.php?t=150

For forum guidelines. We do not have a strict policy but when people start abusing the law, we have to enforce it ;-)

One small addendum I added a guideline for ponyfication of posts that are spam. Doing this is an effective way to fend off posters that attempt shameless advertising. For a list of all people we made an example of, search for the word "pony" in this forum. Some are quite funny even when they started out as spam :-)

Thanks everyone for helping out!

Thanks Jorgen, guess this means that I also need to start making some of my posts a little less hostile and be a little more patient now too. :)

Hi Guys,

Can you check if you are truely a moderator? I took all steps needed, but I needed to change it on a few places. I do not see your title(s) change to moderator, so I might have missed out on a step.

Well you can make a text page containing canned responses. If you get the zillionth person not using code tags, you can even insert haiku's or other funny rhymes as a canned response ;-) But being patient is a good start. A lot of people make similar mistakes all individually, we see just another mistake we have seen so many times before....

Hi Jorgen. Thanks for the promotion :) .
Can you check if you are truly a moderator?
I'm moderately sure that I am a moderator: the hidden controls have appeared, and the one I've tried works OK.
I took all steps needed, but I needed to change it on a few places. I do not see your title(s) change to moderator, so I might have missed out on a step.
We're not on the list of moderators at the top of each forum either: "Moderators: tierra, DavidHart, Auria, wxForum Moderators". Perhaps the two things are connected.

I'm looking forward to no longer being 'part of the furniture': life as a table-leg is no fun.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for the info. You should be ranked moderator now. Indeed it was a special rank I forgot to set. So far there are like a few things I need to do:

- Make you member of the moderators group
- Give you moderator permissions in the specific forums
- Give you the rank of moderattor (forgot to do that)

Handy to remember, as I always forget one or two steps.

And yes life as a table leg is no fun, but I figured you more a "couch" type, or at the least a "kitchen table" :-)

Everything seems to be in place. I have access to the hidden forum, and I appear to be able to edit your posts ;)

Hi Jorg,
Still hanging out here, still monitoring :D
I'm just not as active in posting as I used to be.

Similar description applies to me, but a little less active.

A busy server-side job has put me in a further distance to wx World, as I have been visiting wxForum barely weekly for the last few months, and basically only moderating Chinese section in a limited way-- guide people to documents, "assist" and "accept"good answers, code-tag code snippets, and change inappropriate titles -- and seldom check out what's going on in other sections. So I almost missed this post.

Chinese section has pretty much fresh blood, and these new members are helping each other. While I'm absent and the tranlation of forum guidelines stands, a good order is still being kept. So far, so good.

Hi Utensil,

Thanks for the update. I can't monitor the chinese forums myself, but if you say they are doing good, then that's great to hear!

I'm still occasionally checking the forum. However, other stuff has been keeping me quite busy. Hopefully that will change in the near future and I'll have more time to help other members with their wxProblems.
