Hi CMark,

Yes I know, it might not be the most solid mechanism, but it helps in reflecting status of our valued contributors. For example, if a person has like 2000+ wxAwards, if he either helped answer (assist) 2000 questions, or got awarded for accepted answers 400 times, it still means he is pretty darn good in what he does ;-)

I lack in time, and every time I want to set up a solid system to perform some maintenance on the wxForum database or PHP code, something happens to prohibit it (now my laptop where I installed the wxForum on, has been confiscated by my g/f who is currently in the US and I am not), I really need to try to iron out the small problems soon.

For a different kind of award system we could do something like every new member starts with a wallet of 50 wxawards, when posting a question, a portion of that award money can be reserved for the person who gets the accept on the question. That would value some questions higher then others. But on the other hand, will people who are 'broke' and can't hand out wxAwards anymore, be ignored when they don't have anymore to offer to the people who are hunting for the highest valued awards? Or will those people who are broke try to solve easier questions to replenish their fortune?

It is an interesting thought. What do others think of it?

IIRC, a number of years ago, I wandered on the Java forums, that used a similar system ("duke awards" or so). No idea if it's still this way; but I remember I didn't like the idea, because newcomers have many more questions than answers, so they can't refill their "wallet" even if they wanted to, being newcomers.

What would be needed is a "promise that when you're good at wx you will come back to help others" system, but that's a fantasy :)

Hi,

There doesn't seem to be a shortage of willing answerers atm. If current system ain't broke, let's not fix it ;) .

David

Yeah like I said there are always two sides on a coin, some like it and some don't. This method has been accepted for quite some years now, so I think it is best to just leave it the way it is for now.

Hi Jorg,

What about this idea?

Instead of Assist
to add/use Assist, Assist+, and Assist++.
It could be 1, 5, and 10 points, respectively
(or some other values if you want so).

This way it could be easy to solve both problems
=1= fixed/equal accept points
=== Some topics are quite simple/easy, while some others are not simple/easy at all.
=== Also a member can help you with one simple post or with several very important ones.
=== Always give equal points really doesn't sound so good.
=2= only one accept
=== Sometimes, especially with hard/important topics, several members can help.
=== Give points only to one of them really doesn't sound good/fair, too.
And you could move Accept out of posts
to the top/bottom of the page.

It wouldn't serve to give points no more
(since Assist, Assist+, and Assist++ would be used for that)
but only to mark the topic as solved.

In that sense
it could be renamed to MarkTopicAsSolved (or just Solved).

Maybe you could add MarkTopicAsNormal (or just Normal) too
(if the topic isn't solved, or dropped, or not question, or …)

Best Whishes.

Hi,

I will have to look into that. When I am able to find time to set up my home PC with a new version of the forum, the first thing I want to do is upgrade this forum to a newer version of phpbb, and after that see what is needed to upgrade some other parts of the forum.

Thank you for your input!
