Newest first request

Post by daddydave »

I have a minor (I hope) request for this forum, and that is to either have a "newest first" option at the top of the page or a way to configure my settings so that it comes up that way automatically.

The newest articles are already shown first. Only stickies or announcements overrule that setting I think.

For teh answered post mod, when the icon is orange it contains new icons, and when it is green it doesn't ..

Is there something else you want to see "first" ?

Well, in this thread for example. I see my request first, and then I see your response under it. It's OK if there are just a few replies in a thread, but otherwise it's a lot of scrolling.

Ok I understand. I think that is very hard to do and goes against the natural way of reading the article. For the prople who would read the thread for the first time will have exactly your problem in reverse. They will have to scroll down and then up to read the comments, and that is against the natural reading ;-)

There is an icon next to the last poster's name on the thread subject in the forums, clickign that will bring you to the latest response which makes it easier to scroll back from there. Maybe that is of some help?

I was thinking you could just copy the dropdown at the bottom to the top as well, but if that's a no go, fine. And yes, the tip about the microscopic right arrow icon does indeed help, so I'll get to work practicing my mouse aim. Thank you!

Well if you really feel this would be a good asset to have, you can always file a bug / feature request at;

http://bugs.solidsteel.nl

Please elaborate a bit more as I am wondering if I really understood you right. You want the order of the individual threads toggable from first to last to last -> first?

When you can offer a solution (like describing what you want) in detail, please add that to the bugtracker too. It is no guarantee it is implemented soon, but at least your idea is not lost. The main concern is that I cannot make it a permanent switch because some people find this counter-intuitive.

Not that big a deal. Your tip does help actually, sorry if I sounded sarcastic. Thank you.

daddydave, I was serious, and I hope you dodn't found any sarcastic tone in my voice. The bugrtracker is the only way I can assure you that it will not be forgotten. UpCase our great modder is the only guy who knows phpBB enough to make it, so that's why I need your idea there.

Once again, no sarcasm implied, but what I meant was it I cannot make it a static change as some people might not like it that way.

OK, I'll submit it :). I can think of 2 possible ways to do it without impacting the default sort order.

1) as a personal setting (I guess this would be in profile?).

2) or take that blue filter/navigation bar at the bottom (the one that says All Posts..Oldest First...Go.......General Forum Issues..Go) and put a redundant copy at the top as well. (Conceptually at least, not sure if phpBB works that way in practice) So in other words, the sort order would come up Oldest First as it does now, but it then you could change it without having to scroll down to the bottom.

I'll submit the feature request in a bit

Feature request submitted

http://bugs.solidsteel.nl/view.php?id=32

Summary 0000032: Make it easier to specify posts in a thread Newest First instead of the default Oldest First
Description Problem: When you click on the topic name of a forum thread, the resulting list of replies to that thread is listing from oldest to newest, unnaturally forcing the reader to scan over all previous posts before getting to the newest replies.

Workaround 1: Click on the tiny |> icon to the right of the last poster's name in the Last Post column which takes you to the latest response.

Workaround 2: Scroll all the way to the bottom navigation bar, and choose Oldest First.

Feature Request:

1) Allow the user to indicate he would like threads sorted Newest First as a personal profile setting.

-OR-

2) Add a top navigation bar in addition to the bottom navigation bar. So in other words, the sort order would come up Oldest First for everyone as it does now, but it then you could change it without having to scroll down to the bottom.

CORRECTED AND ADDED TO FEATURE REQUEST:
OOPS. Should read as:

Workaround 2: Scroll all the way to the bottom navigation bar, and choose Newest First.
