Thoughts about where to go from here ...

Post by Jorg »

Ok guys, me moving to a new hosting is not only because I get more for less, I also have plans in opening a portal. This portal must provide the following:

- File management, where people can upload files, and provide it with a small description. This will be the new code dump..
- Blogging and news related to wxWidgets. Everybody is allowed to add news about wxWidgets related articles, or general C++ programming
- Component management. The seperate components people create can be maintained here, providing a small space where the source / components can be hosted and news related to the components can be posted
- Statistics on the downloads
- Comments on posts from others

Overall this will become a huge news site related to wxWidgets and programming. I know I am partially kicking against Otto's shins because he already created wxcode. However after I suggested some changes on the wx-users mailing lists, he refused any changes, and persisted in wanting to keep it like it was. It never really got off the ground.

I think I cannot get around putting a banner on it, to get a bit back from the costs. Don't worry, this banner is hardly visible. I plan to use Mambo, and the banner looks like this demo site;

http://demo.opensourcecms.com/mambo/

Which is really a reasonable compromis, since it is hardly noticable. I will also open a paypal account, and hope to get some back from the costs I am making. I don't plan to make profit from it, or get all my expenses back, simply a bit of compoensation for keeping it in the air ;-)

The messageboard will become part of this portal, I hope the main portal will be visited often and people will post their code on there. Seeing the enthousiastic usage of the Code Dump I am sure this will happen.

Everything will be centered around interaction and a community feeling, typically what the board is right now, but then more.

If anybody has more ideas for this, let me know!

Ads on the portal pages are fine... I would just like to avoid them on the forums

Hey Jorg,

Does this mean the messageboard will instead be accessed through the portal, or will the portal be separate and simply "jump to" the forum through a link?

I am worried people may not like the idea of having to sign up for a portal just to get to the messageboard within (and we don't want to stifle any of the good stuff going on on the board).

It sounds cool, but don't work yourself too hard. 8)

Hi Tyler,

The messageboard will be a jump from the portal. However it would be nicer if users from the messageboard would also be recognised by the portal. I don't know how to solve that yet .

And don't worry it is a long term project, I wanted to make a site for my own components, and wondereed why not one that others can add to as well?

Regards,
