Many people have spent many hours on this, i can almost guarantee that this can not be solved on the client side.

Okay,,, I got it again, I succeeded with below action:
1. Clear forum cookie. [This will make you logout from the forum. Setting->Private&Security->Manage Data, delete entry "wxwidgets.org"]
2. Switch to browser private mode(Ctrl+Shift+P), then login with remember me. I see my name in both right top and WHO IS ONLINE now.
3. Go normal mode, it works too.
[I don't think 2 and 3 is necessary now. Just clear cookie and remove "&sid=xxx" then log in probably be enough.]

If you failed to log out after clear cookie, check your URL, remove "&sid=xxx"

If you failed to log in, check your login page URL.
Address with below form may make you fail.

Code: Select all

https://forums.wxwidgets.org/ucp.php?mode=login&redirect=index.php&sid=9acc84ebf9235f287803239e241410ed
Remove "&sid=xxx" and try.

By the way, I'm using Firefox

Only one name in forum online list make me feel invincible.
Registered users: Baidu [Spider], Bing [Bot], Google [Bot], JohnKnow
But how lonely invincible is.

Just a joke :D , and it is from a film interlude.

Yes,,,seems it is because lucky, I failed with this way many times today.

I found that there is a session id in my coockie phpbb3_bqsdc_sid:5d93e01100daa9f545a457de016eb216
Don't know whether the forum will think me logged in if I change sid to my cookie value. I will try next time the issue comes.

Tell the forum my local cookie's session ID by appending &sid=xxx to URL doesn't work, because each time load the page will refresh local coockie ID.
I tried many times, about 8, the last time local coockie's sid doesn't change and I'm logged in to post a reply here.

I installed a new phpbb extension yesterday. Please let me know if it feels like the login-problem has improved or not.

I didn't have any problem so far, but that doesn't mean too much, as it happened before that i could login for 1 or 2 days straight without any issue.

Unfortunately, I have not noticed any difference.

Yesterday, I was "locked out" almost all day. Today, it also took some time to be able to post.

I can confirm that, unfortunately. I tried to respond to this thread yesterday, but was not able to login for hours and gave up finally.

Due to this problem the wx forum is hardly usable anymore.

I made some more changes today. I'm cautiously optimistic this time, but prepared to get my hopes crushed again.

Please report back (if you can...) :)

I think the problem is time based.
I will try post in different times and see if I can all times

It's been a week now and, despite testing at least once every day, I've not yet had any failures :D . I'd previously been getting the problem on most days.

I hope I've not tempted fate by saying this!

I'm quite confident the issue is solved now. Here's a section from an email i sent to Bryan (tierra) explaining the issue:
Reason for the issues:

The mysql table for the session-ids is a special table type that lies
in memory for performance reasons, the maximum size by default is
16MB. I don't know how much memory one entry uses, but i guess
somewhere between 1 and 2k, which leads to a maximum number of 8k -
16k entries.

There are many bots that access the site, and as they usually don't
support cookies, phpbb assigns the same session id to each known bot.

Unfortunately there were many bots that were not listed in the phpbb
botlist on the forum. This lead to a new session-id entry whenever
one of the bots accessed any page on the forum.

A very nasty bot, "Neevabot" accesses the site almost permanently at a
frequency of one access every 1-2 seconds, which lead to the session
table getting full. If this happens, login is not possible until the
phpbb internal cleanup code cleans up the session table. (I couldn't
find out how often that happens).

I added a total of 14 bots to the phpbb bot list and that essentially
seems to have solved the issue.

Thank you for the explanation. And I'm sure I'm speaking for lots of other users too when I say: Well done!
