AFAIK, wxAuiNotebook doesn't currently support that feature. You could post a feature request to wxWidgets Trac.

You might also be interested in The Boost Format Library. Unlike printf, TBFL is type-safe and supports user-defined types.

Not sure what you're looking for but you could manually send the EVT_LIST_ITEM_ACTIVATED event.
