have a check at wxScintilla (or wxSTC, which is really just a wxScintilla version shipped as part of the main wx package). Are you remembering to link the libraries in? If so you might need to adjust the link order Mingw is a bit fussy.

Straight forward and printing are two words that don't mix very well. wxHTMLPrintout is your easiest option, but you don't get a huge amount of control over layout. For basic printing it is fine.

Hopefully I will complete the pdf and update at the same time when the final wxDev-C++ release is out. I have been holding since it will require a major rewrite.

I think there is an add-on wxPlot that does this, there are also a couple of other libraries whose names I can't remember at the moment, try looking on wxCode.

I created a controller class that derived from wxEventHandler this then allowed the class to recieve, create and fire events.

Can you start a timer when the list control has one or more items in it, then each time the timer expires check all the items in the list control and update them?
