It depends on the task at hand.
Usually subclassing wxWidgets controls have very small use-case scenarios especially with the latest release where you can dynamically bind the event from anywhere
The only 2 GUI classes that aer make sense subcklassing are wxFrame/wxTLW and wxDialog.

What issues you encounter when trying to build the library with 3.0? You should probably try to address them with MatPlotLib developers.

Mouse events are not propagated up the chain.
You need to catch it at the highest level and send it yourself down the road.

What do you want it to be caught in the window and not the children level?
